What is the Academic Bank of Credits, and how does it help a stalled degree?

The Academic Bank of Credits is a UGC framework that stores a student's earned credits in a portable digital account. Because the credits sit with the student rather than one college, a recognised university can accept them and admit you at the year those credits support.
The problem it was built to solve
Before the Academic Bank of Credits, a half-finished degree was close to worthless. If you cleared five semesters and then had to stop, those five semesters lived only in one college’s records. Moving anywhere else meant starting again at year one.
What actually changed
The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is a UGC framework that holds a student’s earned credits in a portable digital account, tied to the student rather than the institution. A credit earned and recorded stays yours.
That single change is what makes transfer possible. A receiving university can look at what you have banked, map it against its own scheme, and admit you at the point those credits justify.
What it does not do
Three honest limits, because this is where most students are misled:
- It is not automatic. No university is obliged to accept your credits. Each one runs its own equivalence check.
- It does not create credits you never earned. Arrears stay arrears. Subjects you never cleared must still be cleared.
- It does not bypass entrance requirements where a regulator sets them. NATA for architecture and NEET for medicine are unaffected.
How it works in practice
- Your marksheets are read subject by subject to establish what is genuinely cleared
- Cleared subjects are mapped against the receiving university’s scheme
- The equivalence committee confirms the entry year
- You join at 2nd or 3rd year and complete the remaining semesters
The degree issued at the end is a normal UGC-recognised degree from the receiving university. Nothing on it records the route you took.
Who this genuinely helps
Students with a year-back, a discontinued course, standing arrears, or an expired maximum duration. If you have cleared real credits and simply cannot finish where you started, this framework exists for you.
If you have cleared almost nothing, transfer will not rescue the situation, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
